Finntroll est fondé en mars 1997 par Somnium à la guitare et Katla au chant. Ils enregistrent leur première démo, intitulée Rivfader, en janvier 1998  (disponible en libre téléchargement sur leur site). D'autres membres viennent ensuite compléter le groupe : Beast Dominator (Barathrum,Rapture) à la batterie, Skrymer à la guitare, Trollhorn (moonsorrow) au clavier, et Tundra à la basse.

Ils sortent en 1999 leur premier album studio, Midnattens Widunder, chez spinefarmes reccords. Cet album bénéficie d'une très bonne production et établit les bases musicales du groupe : du black metal aux mélodies folkloriques.
